Third Overall for Mclellan at MXGP Round 15 as Farres Places Fourth to Maintain Championship Lead

Triumph Factory Racing’s Camden McLellan has delivered another overall podium result with third at the MXGP of Sweden. Fast and consistent all weekend at the hardpack Uddevalla circuit, McLellan finished third in both races to secure his 10th top-three finish this season. Teammate Guillem Farres overcame a crash in the qualifying race to secure valuable points and the championship leader claimed fourth overall despite racing in discomfort.

Two weeks on from his Grand Prix win in the deep sand of Belgium, McLellan headed to round 15 in Sweden focused on delivering the same result. By placing third in the qualifying race, the tone was set for the South African to compete for overall victory in the Swedish Grand Prix.

In the opening moto, McLellan started well in fourth aboard his TF 250-X with his sights set on the leading riders. However, with the track proving difficult to make passes, he only could only advance one position in the closing stages of the moto and he crossed the finish line in third.

McLellan’s start in race two was similar as he emerged from the first turn in fourth. This time, he was able to move into third quickly and gave chase to Sacha Coenen in first and Liam Everts in second. With the trio posting similar lap times all race, Camden was unable to pass either rival and he claimed another third place finish for third overall on the day. Leaving Sweden, McLellan maintains third in the championship.

Having secured his future with the team to compete in the MXGP class for the next three years during the week leading up to Sweden, Farres headed to round 15 with a renewed motivation to maintain his series lead. Unfortunately, a crash in the qualifying race resulted a cut to his forehead that required stitches.

Lining up for the two Grand Prix races feeling a little detuned, the Spaniard placed sixth in race one before improving to finish fourth in moto two. Crucially, Guillem continues as the championship leader with a 24-point lead at the top of the standings with Triumph still leading the Manufacturer’s Championship.

Following an eventful weekend in Sweden, the team will now switch its focus to round 16 next weekend. The sand track of Arnhem hosts the MXGP of the Netherlands.

Camden McLellan

“Yeah, it was two tough races today. Starts were not bad at all, especially by my standards. It’s a tough track to make a difference and a tough track to pass, and it showed in the first race. I spent most of the moto behind Janis Reisulis, who’s a very good defensive rider, and passed him for third near the end. Second race, I was pretty far back but came through well on the first lap, but near the end backmarkers held me up. Overall, I’m pretty happy with how the weekend’s gone and as always, thanks to the team.”

Guillem Farres

“It was actually a great Sunday for me. I knew today was going to be a challenge after my crash yesterday, and I’m really happy with how the team and I managed everything. We made it happen and especially in the second race, I was having a lot of fun coming back through the field. Physically, I’m not feeling too bad, and I’m sure I’ll be fine for next weekend.”

Vincent Bereni – Triumph Factory Racing Team Manager

“Obviously, after a really tough Saturday, it was a really good Sunday for both riders. Camden struggled a little bit in qualifying but managed a good third while Guillem had that massive crash. Going into Sunday, there were a lot of unknowns, but in the end there were plenty of positives. Two good starts for Camden this weekend and he was fighting at the front right away. He did a really good job, especially in the second moto, where he was really strong towards the end and looked very solid. It showed again that his raw speed makes him one of the fastest riders on track every weekend, so I’m really proud of Camden. The same goes for Guillem. To come away from the weekend with 6-4 results and fourth overall is really positive. Okay, we lost some ground in the championship, but the reality is that on Saturday night we didn’t even know if he would be able to race on Sunday, so I would call it a positive weekend. Now we need to manage the coming week well. A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard to help Guillem get back on the bike today, including the physio and the doctor who took care of him yesterday. Now we look ahead to the Netherlands.”
